Tigran Gambaryan, a well-known leader at Binance and a U.S. national, has been in serious health problems while being held in Nigeria since February 2024. His health has quickly gotten worse, and he needs several surgeries right away, including ones to remove his tonsils and fix a damaged disc in his back.
Gambaryan’s health has gotten so bad that he has to use a wheelchair and spend most of his time in bed because he has constant throat infections, asthma, and other problems. His wife, Yuki Gambaryan, has warned that her husband, who used to be busy and healthy, is now in a serious situation because of conditions that have not been treated. Not getting the right medical care has also made people worry that he might lose the ability to walk permanently.
Things got worse after Gambaryan’s court hearing in July, where it was clear that his health was getting worse. The Nigerian government has not followed through on a court order to release his medical information and get him the care he needs. The bad conditions in Kuje jail and the jail officials’ lack of care for him have made his health problems worse, which puts his life in grave danger.
Gambaryan was first arrested with a coworker on charges of financial wrongdoing. Some of the charges against him have since been dropped, but the most serious ones still stand. U.S. politicians are very concerned about his arrest and have asked the U.S. government to step in, seeing his case as a possible hostage situation. Even with all of these attempts, the Nigerian government has not been very ready to deal with the growing health problems.
Gambaryan’s family and lawyers are heartbroken because they fear for his life as his health keeps getting worse. The lack of proper medical care and the ongoing judicial problems have made the situation very bad and need instant attention and action from the whole world.
