As a result of a partnership between Flexa, a digital payments platform, and Chipotle, a popular fast-food chain renowned for its Mexican cuisine, Chipotle will now accept cryptocurrency payments. On Wednesday, Flexa announced their partnership with Chipotle, where Chipotle customers will be able to pay using 98 different types of digital currencies, including Bitcoin and Ethereum. There are nearly 3000 Chipotle restaurants in the United States that will accept cryptocurrency as a form of payment for their food products.
At all Chipotle restaurants across the country, customers can pay for their burritos and other Tex-Mex favorites using the Flexa payment platform. The Flexa platform supports 98 digital currencies, including bitcoin and ethereum. To make in-store purchases using Flexa, customers must download the Gemini or SPEDN app on their cell phones, which stores digital assets.
As part of the “chiptocurrency” promotion, Chipotle partnered with former Ripple chief technology officer Stefan Thomas, to build a game in which players guessed a code with the possibility of winning a burrito or Bitcoin worth up to $25,000 and more.
Previously, Chipotle experimented briefly with cryptocurrencies. The company offered free burritos and Bitcoins worth $100,000 on April 20, 2021 to commemorate National Burrito Day and claimed to be the first chain of restaurants in the United States to offer a crypto giveaway.
Many other fast food chains have explored or indicated an interest in crypto and metaverse applications for their brands. Burger King announced in November 2021 that it would be partnering with trading platform Robinhood to give away free $DOGE $BTC and $ETH with meal purchases.
