The Web3 wallet MetaMask has collaborated with security startup Blockaid to include native security warnings onto its browser plugin. As a result of this partnership, MetaMask will be one of the first self-custody web3 wallets that offer integrated security warnings. The function claims to block harmful transactions and safeguard consumers from frauds, phishing attempts, and hacks while maintaining user privacy.
Desktop users of MetaMask may start taking use of the new capability today by enabling the Privacy Preserving Offline Module (PPOM) under the MetaMask experimental configuration. Those who elect to opt-in at the early stage of the integration process will get notifications if a transaction looks to be malicious, with the new functionality coming on the MetaMask mobile app later in November.
PPOM is essentially an offline security engine that can simulate and validate transactions and signatures before signing them using only node RPC communication requests to a configured node provider no other data is sent to an external server.
It is planned to have the new functionality fully incorporated and activated into the wallet by default, so ensuring its availability to all MetaMask users by the first quarter of 2024. The delayed distribution is intended to reduce “false positives,” such as incorrectly labeling lawful processes as malicious, so that the tool becomes a trusted addition among users.
