PayPal Enhances Crypto and Cross-Border Payment Services with $PYUSD

Xoom now supports the conversion of PYUSD to USD for international payments.

In a significant expansion of its cryptocurrency and cross-border payment services, PayPal has introduced innovative solutions aimed at streamlining digital currency transactions and international money transfers. The financial services giant has rolled out an “Off Ramp” service, allowing users to convert cryptocurrency into USD seamlessly. Concurrently, Xoom, PayPal’s international money transfer arm, now enables U.S. customers to fund transfers using a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin, PYUSD, offering an affordable and efficient option for sending money globally.

The newly launched “Off Ramp” service by PayPal permits direct conversion of crypto tokens to USD, facilitating users to transfer funds from their digital wallets into PayPal accounts effortlessly. This service, which is initially available to U.S. customers, integrates with wallets, decentralized applications (dApps), and NFT marketplaces, heralding a significant step towards enhancing the utility and accessibility of cryptocurrencies for mainstream financial transactions.

PayPal’s foray into the cryptocurrency market further solidifies with the utilization of PYUSD, a stablecoin pegged to the U.S. dollar, aimed at providing stability and confidence for users engaging in digital currency transactions. Unlike more volatile cryptocurrencies, PYUSD offers a dependable medium for commerce and payments, underpinned by PayPal’s robust security controls and tools.

Jose Fernandez da Ponte, Senior Vice President of the Blockchain, Cryptocurrency, and Digital Currency Group at PayPal, emphasized that these initiatives are geared towards fostering the widespread adoption of cryptocurrencies. By creating a stable and useful digital currency in PYUSD, and enabling its use for practical applications such as cross-border payments through Xoom, PayPal is making significant strides in integrating digital currencies into everyday financial activities.

Xoom’s adaptation to include PYUSD as a funding source for international money transfers is particularly noteworthy. This feature allows U.S. users to convert PYUSD to USD with no transaction fees, making it a cost-effective alternative for sending money to over 160 countries worldwide. The World Bank’s report highlights the cost benefits, with the global average cost of sending $200 standing just over 6%, Xoom’s initiative represents a tangible savings opportunity for consumers.

The process for funding Xoom transactions with PYUSD is straightforward, involving simple steps from selection to transaction completion, ensuring a user-friendly experience. This integration not only advances the utility of PayPal’s digital currency but also aligns with the company’s vision of reducing the costs and complexities associated with traditional cross-border money transfers.

By blending the worlds of cryptocurrency and international remittance, PayPal and Xoom are at the forefront of a financial revolution, offering secure, efficient, and affordable options for digital and cross-border transactions. These developments mark a significant milestone in the journey towards a more inclusive and interconnected global financial ecosystem.
