Gene Sperling, a senior economic adviser to President Joe Biden and former member of Ripple Labs’ board of directors, is set to leave the White House to join Kamala Harris’ 2024 presidential campaign. This move, announced on August 5, comes as Harris prepares for the upcoming presidential election, with her main contender being Republican nominee Donald Trump.
Sperling has had an extensive career in economic policy, serving under Presidents Bill Clinton and Barack Obama before joining the Biden administration in 2021. During his tenure, he played a significant role in managing Biden’s $1.9 trillion pandemic aid package and acted as a liaison during auto strikes. President Biden praised Sperling for his contributions, highlighting his efforts in providing child tax cut relief to nearly 40 million working families and emergency assistance to over 8 million renters.
In 2015, Sperling joined Ripple Labs’ board of directors, advocating for the company’s mission to enhance the speed and efficiency of cross-border payments. His expertise in cryptocurrency is expected to be valuable to Harris’ campaign, especially as it considers taking a public position on the technology.
David Plouffe, another former adviser to President Obama and Binance’s global advisory board member, has also joined Harris’ campaign team. This move is part of a broader trend of personnel from the Biden administration supporting Harris’ presidential bid. Anita Dunn, who participated in a roundtable with crypto industry representatives, is reportedly set to join a Democratic-focused political action committee.
The Harris campaign is expected to engage with representatives from crypto firms and US lawmakers in a roundtable event this week, potentially shaping its stance on cryptocurrency and blockchain technology.
