British Engineer Files $647M Lawsuit Against Council Over Missing Bitcoin Hard Drivers

James Howells, a Newport IT engineer, is suing Newport City Council for $647 million after they turned down his repeated requests to dig a landfill where his abandoned hard drive holding 8,000 bitcoins is thought to be buried. The council notes environmental issues for its rejection even when Howells provides some of the recovered bitcoin.

Seeking 495 million British pounds (about $647 million), Newport’s IT expert James Howells is in legal hot pursuit of Newport City Council. This relates to his unintentional thumb drive disposal of 8,000 Bitcoin during a 2013 domestic clean-out. What was previously a small error has become a major battle as the value of Bitcoin has surged.

Howells’s attempts to dig and retrieve the over half a billion pound hard drive from a local landfill have been continually thwarted by the municipality.

A Mistake Worth Paying for

Back in 2013, when Bitcoin was valued about one million pounds ($1.3 million), Howells unintentionally tossed away the hard disk. The value of Bitcoin has skyrocket since then; his lost assets are now valued a fortune. Howells has tried multiple times over the past 10 years to get access to the dump where the concrete drive may be found, but Newport City Council has regularly turned down his proposals.

Environmental issues

The council of Newport City has refused citing environmental dangers as the cause. Among the hazardous elements in the landfill in issue are methane, arsenic, and asbestos. Although Howells has given 10% of the found Bitcoin’s worth, the council contends that excavating the location might seriously endanger the environment and they are not ready to take such risk.

Technological Recovery Strategy

Howells suggested a high-tech, privately sponsored $11 million solution with advanced technologies to retrieve internal drive in 2022. According to his scheme, misplaced bitcoin will be found by robots sorting through an expected 110,000 tons of trash. The council still rejects his ideas nevertheless, and is not sure whether this strategy is feasible.

Lessons About Crypto Security

James Howells’s continuing narrative serves as a sobering reminder of the need of appropriately safeguarding digital resources. Hardware wallets should be kept safely, private keys offline, and recovery phrases backed up across many safe sites for owners of cryptocurrencies. For everyone engaged in the crypto world, Howells’s experience serves as a warning story.
