Caroline Ellison, who used to be CEO of Alameda Research, is getting ready for her September 24, 2024, sentencing case. Just before this important date, Ellison’s lawyer filed a move asking the court to keep the names of her backers secret.
It was sent to the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York on September 9 and asks that the names and personal information of people who have written messages of support for Ellison be kept secret. Anjan Sahni, her lawyer at WilmerHale, says that because the media is paying so much attention to the case, letting this information out could lead to unwanted abuse of these followers.
Ellison pleaded guilty to fraud charges in December 2022. Since she testified against former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried, she hasn’t been seen by many people. Ryan Salame is going to prison for 90 months soon, and Bankman-Fried is going to prison for 25 years. Her sentencing is going to be a big event in the current FTX court case.
In the filing, the court also asks that some personal and medical details be taken out of the sentencing papers. Ellison’s lawyers want to keep information about where she lives now, her boyfriend, and the groups she is involved with from the public. Also, they want to keep any medical information secret, even about possible cures.
When Ellison asks for something, it shows how sensitive and dangerous her case could be, especially since her private information has been leaked before. The move shows that Ellison and her allies are worried about their safety and privacy.
Ellison is waiting to be sentenced. She could get as long as 110 years in prison, but lawyers say that because she cooperated and testified, she may get a lighter term. Nishad Singh and Gary Wang, two leaders at FTX, have set dates for their own sentence hearings later this year.
