Gelephu Mindfulness City (GMC), a newly designated economic area in Bhutan, intends to establish a strategic cryptocurrency reserve. This project will encompass popular digital assets such as Bitcoin and Ether, representing a significant step forward in Bhutan’s growing involvement in the cryptocurrency sector.
The strategic reserve aims to boost the region’s economic resilience by utilizing the stability and liquidity of existing cryptocurrencies. Unlike other jurisdictions that focus primarily on Bitcoin, GMC intends to diversify its reserves by including a variety of high-market capitalization assets. We will select these digital currencies based on their high liquidity and low price volatility, which will simplify trading when needed.
The Gelephu administration also plans to emphasize digital assets issued on mature and secure blockchain networks capable of transaction monitoring. This move is consistent with Bhutan’s overall objective of becoming a hub for blockchain innovation and sustainable economic growth.
Bhutan’s existing cryptocurrency investmentsBhutan has previously progressed in the cryptocurrency field through Druk Holdings and Investments (DHI), the government’s business arm. DHI presently owns a sizable portfolio of digital assets, including more than 11,000 Bitcoin and hundreds of Ethereum. Bhutan has collected these assets through local Bitcoin mining activities and strategic investments, making it one of the world’s largest government Bitcoin holdings.
The country’s cryptocurrency policy goes beyond reserve building. Partnerships with top mining firms like Bitdeer have expanded its mining capabilities, while investments in numerous blockchain projects demonstrate the company’s dedication to the industry’s future.
Gelephu’s Position in Bhutan’s VisionBhutan’s long-term development strategy includes Gelephu Mindfulness City as a sustainable and innovative economic corridor. The two-decade-long project intends to connect South and Southeast Asia while supporting growth in emerging areas such as digital banking.
The GMC administration intends to hold conversations with key government authorities and worldwide industry leaders to complete its crypto reserve architecture. We aim to shape the region’s role in the global digital economy through these talks, scheduled for March.
Bhutan’s forward-thinking attitude and smart investments position it to develop its economy while capitalizing on cryptocurrencies’ transformative potential.
